Snow Days

For all the teachers on affected by the big blizzard.

I know that Snow Days are a mess to deal with, and cost valuable classroom time. Usually the solution is adding days at the end of the year. I can remember back when I was in High School and this happened, a few days were added at the end of the year after most of the Regents and Finals had been taken. On these days, nothing is really done, and I don't even know if the students were expected to be in school. I assume that in Elementary school things might be similar, hot days, end of the year, lessons have already been covered.

What is your solution for dealing with snow days? This day in age, would it be feasible to somehow hold classes online? Assign them large chunks of material to read/teach themselves, e-mail any questions that they may need help with, and quiz them the first day the return back?

With a solution like this, do the students usually have the appropriate internet access at home for a solution like this to be feasible?

The School of the Air, a solution used in Australia for students in isolated regions. In years past the students used radios, but with developments in technology things have changed.
